A book design response to the Penguin Student Design Awards 2017.
Although there are many themes running throughout this book, with this illustration the focus is on the setting, in a southern American neighborhood, and the class hierarchies also. The ways in which the setting depicted is by the choice of colour and texture. A heavily textured, sandy yellow background helps convey a dry, hot southern American state. Furthermore, there appears to be many characters in the book who’s story lines seems to overlap one another, therefore, the fencing is to represent the neighborhood, and some fencing looks brand new, and on the other hand, some appears to be worn and rickety, to imply the different class hierarchies, racially and socially.
